KplusK were instrumental in the design and birth of the Ovolo Brand back in 2002.  Working closely with the CEO, Mr. Girish Jhunjhnuwala KplusK designed all of Ovolo’s Properties in Asia, the latest that which is this 162-key hotel in Wong Chuk Hang, Hong Kong. Ovolo Southside has been added to the illustrious worldwide collection of Design hotels.

Wong Chuk Hang was, up until recently, a rundown industrial zone on the south side of Hong Kong Island. The Property has been re-developed as a hotel but the design has striven towards retaining the building’s roots as a raw industrial space. 

 

The building’s interior has been conceived as a utilitarian loft environment, with high raw plaster ceilings, exposed services and industrial grilles.  The ambiance is a schizophrenic mixture of the domestic and the utilitarian; workmen’s tool boxes, plaid beds, geometric screens, steel workbenches, bronze mirrors, sumptuous black felt sofas and rust belt frames. 

 

The guestrooms are easy to use.  No complicated dimming systems, the environment is a combination of on and off.  In keeping with Ovolo’s DNA, the guestrooms offer free mini bar and wifi. The showers and AV systems are generous and Apple TV comes as standard.  

 

The building externally has been renovated as a piece of urban camouflage. Its old windows are placed with full height glazing to maximize light and views out.  The building’s skin is doused in a razzle dazzle paint effect redolent of a First World War battle cruiser, concealing its presence in the banal envrions of its neighbors…….until night falls and it comes to life. 

 

Ovolo Southside has been chosen as a member of the Design Hotels™, the illustrious collection of global masterpieces in hotel design. Ovolo Southside is one of only three Design Hotels in Hong Kong.
